The coil is the part of your vape that heats e-liquid to produce vapour. Choosing the right coil and replacing it at the right time makes a noticeable difference to flavour and consistency.
Coil resistance explained
| Resistance | Style | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 ohm and above | Mouth-to-lung (MTL) | Nic salts and 50/50 freebase |
| 0.6 to 0.9 ohm | Restricted direct-to-lung (RDL) or MTL | Nic salts and 50/50 or 60/40 liquids |
| Below 0.5 ohm | Direct-to-lung (DTL), sub-ohm | High-VG shortfills at low nicotine |
Checking compatibility
Coils are designed for specific tanks or pod systems. For example, Aspire Nautilus BVC coils fit Nautilus tanks, Voopoo PnP coils fit PnP-compatible devices and Geekvape Z series coils fit Zeus tanks and some Aegis pod mods. Always check the compatibility list on the product page before ordering. See all replacement coils.
How to prime a new coil
- Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton in the coil.
- Fit the coil and fill the tank or pod.
- Wait five to ten minutes so the cotton is fully saturated.
- Start at the lower end of the recommended wattage range.
When to replace a coil
Replace the coil when you notice a burnt or muted taste, reduced vapour, or gurgling that does not clear. Coil life varies with use and e-liquid; sweet liquids tend to shorten it. For pod kits with built-in coils, replace the whole pod.
